A Hearing for Jim Thorpe” convincingly imagines the courtroom proceeding that might have exonerated this legendary athlete by presenting both sides of his case to the public. The book abounds in period detail and vivid characterization of historical figures. The author creates a believable narrator to witness the action and sift through the motives of the various parties who variously supported, manipulated, and discredited Thorpe. Although nearly a century has passed since the events used as the basis for this book, the story of a simple man punished for his success by a resentful establishment is still relevant today.”

The passion that Michael Sheaffer has for Jim Thorpe leaps from every page. His conviction is clear and un-mistakable, and will give any reader pause for thought.

A Hearing for Jim Thorpe is relevant today and should be required reading.  Here is every American’s role-model.  Stuff happens – and it always rolls down hill. What is or is not fair justice – when it has to be strained through our legal system – and influenced by short-sided bureaucrats?   I would like to have heard Jim Thorpe’s opinion on that – or is silence his only advice to us.

A hearing for Jim Thorpe is an excellent snapshot into the frustrating life of Jim Thorpe.  The writing style is both entertaining, because of the human perspective, but it’s also infuriating in the historical scope.  Michael L. Sheaffer does an excellent job of taking the reader into the life of Jim Thorpe during a specific time, but also the courtroom and gives perspective to an era of inequality.  I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in sports history, but even more to people who thirst for justice and wish to learn the truth.

I enjoyed reading Mr. Sheaffar’s historical fiction about Jim Thorpe. I believe it was an accurate description and it inspired me to research Mr. Thorpe.
